Learning French or Arabic in Essaouira

A great way to learn languages is through immersion and many people come to Morocco to learn Darija (the Moroccan dialect of Arabic) or French. Essaouira is a small city and there are not many formal language schools, but these two offer lessons:

  • Institut Français, Derb Laâlouj – 9 Rue Mohammed Diouri, Essaouira Médina. Tel : 05 24 47 61 97 / 62 14

It is also possible to find teachers offering private tuition, usually for around 60-100dh per hour. If you would like contact details, please mail maroc-o-phile for further information.

    HI There,
I would really appreciate some more information on private French tuition. I plan to come for 2 weeks in June and would like to combine my kite surfing with private French tuition. I speak basic French but need a lot of practice and guidance!
    Thanks
    K

      Hi Mark,
the options I am aware of are in the post above. If you prefer one-to-one tuition, I can send you the phone number of a private tutor. You can also join the Essaouira Expats and Friends Facebook group and ask members for their experience of learning French in Essaouira – I’m an admin, so I’ll look out for your request to join.
      Have a great trip!

    Hello,

My wife and I are planning to spend 2-3 weeks in Essaouira in July, and were planning to learn French while we’re there. Could you please share the rates for private tutoring? We were thinking of taking daily lessons as we’ll be moving to Paris later this year.

    Thanks!

      Hi Shriram,
it really depends on where you want to study. A private tutor will be cheaper in their home than a large organisation such as the Institut Francais. I suggest you contact the organisations listed above and I will send you the number of a private tutor in an e-mail.
      All the best!

Hi Lynn – I’m also looking for tuition (mainly conversation classes) when I visit Essaouira in October 2017, this year. Could you send me some details too?
            Thanks, David

            Hi David,
thanks for your message. I have replied to you by e-mail with contact details of a teacher. If you didn’t receive it, please check your spam folder. I see you have also joined the Essaouira Expats and Friends Facebook group. That should also be a useful source of contacts.

    Hi Lynn,

Thanks for all the information above!

I’m thinking of relocating to Morocco until April to work on my French. Most, maybe all, of that time will be in Essaouira. Do you have advice on places I could stay for a month or two (other than a hostel)? Could you also send me the information on a private tutor?

    Thanks,
    Parker

      Dear Parker,
I can certainly give you the number of a private tutor who could help you. If you send me a mail to the address on this site with details on what kind of accommodation you are looking for, I could also make some suggestions on that front.
      Regards,
      Lynn

      Hi Hannah,
I’ve sent you an e-mail with the contact details of a local French teacher. Also, just hanging out in cafes popular with expats (eg Maison Gourmande and Patachou in the new town) plus Dar Souiri, the cultural centre in the medina, will surely bring you into contact with French native speakers.
      Have a great trip!

        Dear Lynn,

Thanks for your kind and prompt response. It really helps a lot and I sincerely appreciate it. I have arrived in Morocco and am thinking of coming to Essaouira in the next a few days once everything is settled.

Could you also kindly tell me is there any place/website that I can look for the 1-2 months housing rent in Essaouira? Are there some websites that people use (other than AirBnb)? I’m still a student, so definitely I can’t afford staying in hotels or pensions for such a long time, and I’m thinking of renting a basic house or room as long as it’s equipped with a kitchen and there’s a private space for me to study and practice French…

Many many thanks for your kindness!

          Hi Pavel,
Many Moroccans rent out rooms in season to tourists. You will find agents at the bus station (the main one, not Supratours or CTM) happy to show you around. Of course, prices will be higher for foreigners…. If you stay in a youth hostel for the first couple of days, or take French classes, I am sure you will meet someone who can put you in touch with someone…. That’s how Morocco works.
If you can afford an apartment, let me know – I can recommend somewhere. However, if you are just looking for a room, you are best to find someone on the ground who can help you.
          Have a great time!
