Essaouira restaurant review: La Decouverte

I have eaten at La Découverte in Essaouira both at lunchtime and in the evening. The owner and hostess, Frédérique, has devised a menu of delicious homemade food with fresh ingredients and friendly staff in the Essaouira medina. Frédérique and her team greet you with a smile and a daily specials menu of dishes made from and inspired by local ingredients and cuisine. The menu offers something different to its competitors (pasta, pastilla, salads and briouats as well as tajines and couscous) and as much as possible of the menu is homemade on the premises or using ingredients sourced from local farms, cooperatives and associations.

On a hot afternoon, we sat outside in the shade of the alleyway. Inside, the restaurant is small but cosy. I had a selection of briouats and pastilla (like a Moroccan version of samosa or burek) and a puy lentil salad with argan oil. My companions had couscous with camel meat and – an Essaouira speciality – tajine of sardine balls. All were well-prepared, tasty and filling. Unable to resist, we also had desserts and tea/coffee.

The restaurant is also a good address to inform yourself about guided walks around the local countryside, visiting argan oil cooperatives and local Berber families. Wifi is available.
